Crop PDF margins

Office flatbeds and sheet feeders often leave wide blank gutters, punch-hole shadows, or dark edges around scanned paperwork. This tool trims away unnecessary white borders automatically, or cuts fixed margins, which also removes dark edges and shadows, to give contracts, invoices, and applications a clean, professional appearance. Everything runs locally in your browser, keeping business documents strictly confidential.

How to crop a PDF

  1. Add your PDF documents by dropping them into the queue or choosing them from your computer.
  2. Pick “Trim white margins” with standard 3 mm padding, or select “Cut fixed margins” to remove exact borders.
  3. To crop only some sheets, type their numbers under More settings, then press Crop.
  4. Download the cleaned files one by one or collect the entire batch in a single ZIP archive.

Cleaning up scanned contracts and invoices

Automatic margin trimming evaluates the ink on each page and pulls the bounding frame tightly around the actual text and tables. Setting padding to 3 mm or 6 mm ensures that stamps, handwritten notes, and edge text do not press against the sheet border. Keeping the uniform crop setting active maintains identical page dimensions across an entire contract, avoiding distracting jumps in size during review.

For documents with persistent scanner shadows or pre-printed registration lines along the sheet edges, fixed margin mode allows you to strip specific millimetres from any side. Defaulting to 10 mm on all edges, this mode easily strips binder holes, fax headers, and margin notes across stacks of receipts or payroll records without altering the underlying content.

Important distinction between cropping and redaction

Adjusting the crop box shifts the viewing perimeter defined in the PDF specification, meaning standard readers display only the interior area. Because the original page streams and embedded assets are not rewritten or resampled, text remains fully selectable and vector clarity is preserved with no loss in printing quality.

However, office staff must remember that hidden content remains stored inside the file structure. A recipient with a desktop PDF editor can easily restore the original boundary dimensions to reveal cropped text. If you need to permanently discard personal data, financial balances, or confidential clauses, delete those elements with redaction tools rather than relying on margin cropping.

Streamlining document filing and archiving

Excess borders waste valuable visual space when reviewers inspect documents on desktop monitors or laptop screens. Trimming out blank margins makes invoices and insurance submissions legible at standard zoom levels, speeding up approvals and administrative audits.

When handling multi-page agreements where only select sheets have scanner flaws, enter numbers such as 1-3, 5 into the page field to limit your changes. Files secured with an open password should be processed with Unlock PDF beforehand, and completed outputs can be passed seamlessly into Compress PDF using Continue with.

Questions

Does cropping reduce file size for email submissions?

No. The file size remains almost identical because cropping hides margin content rather than stripping the underlying data streams.

Can I remove binder hole punches from scanned records?

Yes. Switch to Cut fixed margins and set an appropriate left or right cut in millimetres to trim away punch marks cleanly.

Will blank separator sheets be affected by automatic trimming?

In trim mode, completely blank pages are detected and left as they are, preventing unwanted shifts or errors in your document structure.

Is it safe to crop confidential payroll or personnel files here?

Yes. Processing uses pdf-lib and pdf.js directly on your device, meaning your paperwork is never transmitted across the network.
