How to use the EPUB to MOBI converter
- Add the DRM-free EPUB books.
- Convert to MOBI.
- Connect the Kindle with a USB cable and place the .mobi files in the Kindle’s documents directory.
Is MOBI really what you need?
Send to Kindle, by email or app, no longer takes MOBI and accepts EPUB as it is, so wireless delivery needs no conversion. For USB copying to a Kindle released in 2012 or later, AZW3 is better: it holds on to embedded fonts, tables and stylesheet layout, all of which MOBI throws away.
MOBI remains the right answer for a Kindle Keyboard or anything older, and for programs that never added AZW3 support.
Inside the MOBI file
You get a classic MOBI 6 book with cover, contents, chapter breaks, headings, bold, italic and images. Floating images, wide tables and custom fonts are simplified, because MOBI 6 formatting dates from early HTML.
Title, author and publisher from the EPUB go into the MOBI header, which means the book appears under its proper name on the Kindle home screen.
Upload and deletion
The conversion uses calibre on our server, so the EPUB is sent over HTTPS and converted in an isolated process.
Both files are deleted right after the MOBI is returned to your browser.
Questions
Is my EPUB stored after conversion?
No. calibre reads it, writes the MOBI, and both files are erased from our server as soon as the MOBI is on its way to you.
How long does a conversion take?
A typical novel converts in seconds. Large illustrated books take longer, and the server allows up to 15 minutes per file before it gives up.
Why does it look simpler than the EPUB?
MOBI 6 understands far less styling. Owners of a 2012-or-newer Kindle should use the EPUB to AZW3 page instead.
Can I prepare a batch for an old Kindle?
Yes. Add every EPUB and convert. Then extract the downloaded ZIP and move all the MOBI files onto the Kindle in one go.
