How to use the RAR to ZIP converter
- Select the RAR file or files.
- If the RAR is locked, type its password. You may also pick a compression level or a fresh password for the ZIP.
- Click Convert to ZIP and save it.
Why offices prefer ZIP
Windows Explorer, macOS Finder, the iPhone Files app, Android and ChromeOS all open ZIP with no extra software. RAR is a different story: older Windows builds, most phones and managed work machines that block installs simply cannot read it. A ZIP saves the recipient a support ticket.
Nothing about the documents changes. Each one is extracted and written into the ZIP unchanged, with its folder path and date.
Size and encryption
RAR usually squeezes text a little harder than ZIP does, so the ZIP of a document archive may be 5 to 15 percent bigger. With photos, audio or video inside, the difference is negligible.
A RAR with encrypted headers must be opened with the correct password before anything is read, and a wrong one is reported at once. To keep the new ZIP protected for its trip by email, type a new password under More settings to have the ZIP locked with AES-256.
Filing it afterwards
Document management systems, e-invoicing portals and court or tax upload forms commonly list ZIP among accepted formats and leave RAR out. Converting before you upload avoids a rejected submission.
Every ZIP is named after the RAR it came from, and the before and after sizes appear beside every file so you can confirm nothing went missing.
