CSV to TSV

Tab-separated text pastes straight into Excel, Google Sheets and most database clients, landing neatly in columns without an import wizard. It is also what many statistics and mailing tools expect. This page converts a CSV into that format.

How to convert CSV to TSV

  1. Pick the CSV file; its separator is detected for you.
  2. Choose how values containing tabs or line breaks should be written.
  3. Convert and download the .tsv file.

Fewer quotes, same values

Commas are ordinary characters in a TSV, so an address like "Rue de la Paix 3, Paris" no longer needs quotes and is written plainly in its column. Values are copied character for character; nothing is rounded or reformatted.

In the default setting a value is still quoted if it includes a tab, a line break or a double quote, the same convention Excel uses when it saves tab-delimited text.

Strict TSV for scripts and older tools

Some programs split lines purely on tabs and do not understand quotes at all. For them, choose the strict option: tabs and line breaks inside a value are replaced by a space and no quotes are written, so every line is exactly one record.

Lines end with a plain LF, the most common choice for tab-separated files.

Semicolon files from Excel

CSV files saved by Excel in many European countries use semicolons. Detection looks at the first rows and picks the separator that produces an equal number of columns in each, so such files convert without any setting.

If the file is already tab-separated, you get a short notice instead of an identical copy.

Questions

Will my numbers change?

No. Every value is copied as text exactly as it appears in the CSV.

Can I convert several CSV files?

Yes. Each becomes its own TSV, and Download all bundles them in a ZIP.

How do I paste the result into a sheet?

Open the .tsv in a text editor, copy everything and paste it into the first cell of an empty sheet. Excel and Google Sheets spread the values across columns at each tab.

Is the CSV sent anywhere?

No. The file is read and rewritten inside your browser tab.
