How to use the TAR.GZ to ZIP converter
- Select the tarballs: .tar.gz, .tar.xz, .tar.bz2, their short forms, or plain .tar.
- If you like, adjust the ZIP compression level, or protect the ZIP with a password in More settings.
- Click Convert to ZIP and save it.
Skipping the manual three-step
By hand you would decompress to a .tar, unpack that into a folder and then zip the folder again. Here the outer layer is recognised from the data itself, the TAR gets opened in memory, and its files go directly into the ZIP.
Directory structure and modification dates come through, so a website backup looks the same once someone unzips it.
What does not fit into a ZIP
Tarballs can carry symbolic links, device entries, owner names and permission bits. The ZIP keeps every regular file and its path but leaves those Unix details behind; symbolic links are not copied at all.
ZIP compresses each file on its own, so a tarball of many tiny files may grow a little after conversion.
Names and batches
The double extension is handled properly: backup-2026.tar.gz becomes backup-2026.zip, not backup-2026.tar.zip. Several tarballs can be added together and are converted in turn.
Hidden dot-files from a website or source tree are placed in the ZIP with everything else.
Questions
Are .tar.bz2 and .tar.xz accepted?
Yes. Gzip, bzip2 and xz tarballs are unpacked automatically, and an uncompressed .tar works too.
What if the .gz is not a tarball?
Then it holds just one compressed file, for example payments.csv.gz. That file is unpacked and placed in the ZIP on its own.
Is the tarball uploaded for conversion?
No. The 7-Zip program runs inside the page in a background thread and reads the tarball from your disk, so backups containing customer data stay on your computer.
Can the ZIP be password-protected?
Yes. Set a password in More settings and the ZIP is encrypted with AES-256. Remember that some Windows versions need 7-Zip or a similar tool to open AES ZIPs.
