How to use the AZW3 to EPUB converter
- Choose AZW3 files that have no DRM.
- Convert to EPUB.
- Copy the EPUB to your new reader or import it into your reading app.
Which AZW3 files convert
AZW3 files from calibre libraries, from publishers who supply Kindle-ready copies or from authors sending review copies are DRM-free and convert cleanly. AZW3 is built from HTML and CSS just like EPUB, so little has to be reinterpreted.
Books taken from the Kindle store with Download & Transfer are DRM-protected. They are rejected with an error instead of producing a broken file.
A near-lossless move
Chapter files, stylesheets, embedded fonts and images carry over as they are instead of being rebuilt, and the contents is recreated as an EPUB navigation document. The result opens on Kobo, Nook, PocketBook and Tolino readers.
Extras that only Amazon’s store supplies, like page-number maps or X-Ray, never existed in the file and so are absent from the EPUB.
One book at a time on the server
calibre runs on our server, so each AZW3 is uploaded over HTTPS on its own and converted without network access. A folder of books is processed in sequence, each with its own progress bar, and can be saved as one ZIP at the end.
Every book and its EPUB are deleted right after the converted file is returned, so a large batch never accumulates on our disk.
Questions
Can I bring my Kindle highlights along?
No. Highlights and notes are stored by the Kindle or your Amazon account, not inside the AZW3 file, so the EPUB contains only the book itself.
Can I convert several books together?
Yes. Add the whole set; each book is converted and returned on its own, and all the EPUB files can be saved in one ZIP at the end.
Will the EPUB open on a Kobo?
Yes. Kobo, Nook, PocketBook and Tolino all read standard EPUB.
Is there a limit per book?
95 MB per file, well above the size of a typical novel.
