DOCX to ODT

Some tenders, public bodies and records offices ask for documents as OpenDocument Text (ODT), an ISO standard and the default format of LibreOffice. This page rewrites Word DOCX files, and older DOC or RTF files, as ODT.

DOCX · DOC · RTF · folders and pasted images work too
Sent over HTTPS to our converter and deleted the moment the result is sent back.

How to use the DOCX to ODT converter

  1. Choose the DOCX, DOC or RTF files you need in open format.
  2. Run the conversion to ODT.
  3. Open the result in LibreOffice Writer, or download everything as a ZIP.

Styles carry across by name

Paragraph and character styles, headings, bullet and numbered lists, tables, pictures, footnotes, headers, footers and page setup all exist in OpenDocument too, so LibreOffice maps them one to one. A file built on consistent styles comes out tidy.

Expect the ODT to be bigger than the DOCX, sometimes double for short documents, since LibreOffice also packs its settings and a small preview image into the file.

Word features with no direct match

Word’s content controls and SmartArt, plus some recent chart styles, end up as plain text or fixed drawings. Tracked changes come through, while deeply nested field codes may freeze at their last displayed result.

Sending the ODT back to Word users is safe for normal letters and reports. Pages that rely on text boxes or wrapped pictures deserve a quick look, because anchors can move slightly.

Handled on our server

Writing ODT faithfully needs LibreOffice, which cannot run in a web page, so the document goes to our server over HTTPS and is converted in an isolated process.

Your file and the ODT are deleted right after the converted file is returned, and nothing about their content is logged.

Questions

What does the 95 MB limit cover?

Each document you add may be up to 95 MB, which includes every image packed inside it. Text-only reports are usually far below a megabyte, so the limit only matters for files full of photos.

Can I convert a stack of files for a submission?

Yes. Add them together; they are uploaded and converted one at a time, and the finished ODT files can be downloaded together as a single ZIP archive.

Why would anyone ask for ODT?

It is an openly documented ISO standard, so organisations that must keep files readable for decades prefer a format that no single vendor controls.

Could I just open the DOCX in LibreOffice?

For editing, yes. Converting matters when the file itself must be stored or submitted as ODT.
