How to use the 7Z to ZIP converter
- Select the .7z file.
- Type its password if it was encrypted.
- Click Convert to ZIP and save the result.
The ZIP will usually be bigger
LZMA2 in 7Z compresses text, spreadsheets and source documents much more tightly than Deflate in ZIP, so a converted ZIP can grow by 20 to 60 percent. No data is added; the format is simply less efficient.
If the 7Z mainly contains scans saved as JPG or video, sizes stay close. Picking "Store only" makes such conversions much quicker at almost no cost in size.
Large solid archives
Most 7Z files are solid: all documents are compressed as one continuous stream. The converter therefore unpacks everything before it writes the ZIP, needing memory for the full contents plus the new archive.
Below a few gigabytes that is rarely a problem on a laptop or desktop. Phone browsers limit how much memory a tab may use, so very large 7Z files are better converted on a computer.
Before you send it
Check the size shown next to the finished file. If the ZIP has grown beyond your mail system's attachment limit, share it through a cloud link rather than as an attachment.
A damaged-archive error usually means the 7Z download was cut short. Download it again and compare the size with what the sender reports.
Questions
Does the ZIP keep the 7Z password?
No. Your password unlocks the 7Z, and the resulting ZIP carries no encryption unless you give it its own AES-256 password in More settings.
Are the folders kept?
Yes. Every document keeps its path, and empty folders are carried over too.
How long does a conversion take?
A few seconds for a typical email-sized 7Z. Multi-gigabyte solid archives can take minutes, since everything is decoded and then recompressed in the tab.
Can I convert several 7Z files together?
Yes. Add them all and each is turned into its own ZIP named after the original, one after another.
