How to use the Add Page Numbers
- Add the PDF.
- Pick where the number goes and how it reads, such as “Page 3 of 40” in the lower right corner.
- Under More settings, limit the numbering to certain pages, change the first number, the text size or the colour.
- Press Add and save the numbered copy.
Leaving out cover and contents
Type 3-end under “Number only these pages” with the first number at 1, and the title page and contents stay unmarked while the first real page reads 1. In the “of 12” styles, the total counts only the pages that receive a number.
For a document that continues an earlier volume, set the first number higher, say 45, so the second file picks up where the first one ended.
How the numbers look
Numbers are added as real Helvetica text 28 points from the edge of the page, so they print crisply and turn up in a text search. Pages that are rotated get the number upright along the edge you chose, as the page is displayed.
Nothing is blanked out underneath. If a letterhead or footer already sits in that spot, choose a different corner. Black, grey and red are available.
Merging, then numbering
For a bundle made from several documents, merge them first and number the combined file, so the count runs straight through from the first exhibit to the last.
If the order changes later, reorder the pages of the unnumbered merged file and stamp the numbers again, rather than numbering twice on top of each other.
Questions
Can I use Roman numerals?
No. Numbering is in Arabic numerals, alone or with the English words “Page” and “of”, or as - 1 -.
Can I number a batch of files?
Yes. Add them together; each file is numbered separately, starting from the first number you set.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The numbers are drawn into the PDF inside your browser.
Does it work on scanned documents?
Yes. A scan is a picture inside the PDF, and the number simply sits above it, the same as on a typed page.
